The Price of "Progress"

Prospect Avenue loses the last vestiges of its character as a commercial district for jewelry, clothing, musical instruments and loans with the imminent closing of Volk's, the Mad Hatter and Downtown Records and CDs, to make way for a national chain steakhouse. Cleveland's downtown continues its regrettable transformation from a colorful midwest city of vibrancy and interest to a generic eating, drinking and gambling district for the well-heeled and those who aspire to be rich.
