Lake View Cemetery. Larger-than-life sized statue of the 20th President stands in the rotunda directly over the crypt where he and his wife are interred in bronze caskets. Shot by Charles Guiteau on July 2, 1881. It's now generally recognized that the wound inflicted was serious but not decisively fatal, and that Garfield's doctors, and the crude medical treatments (bordering on medical abuse) to which they subjected their patient, contributed largely to the President's death on September 19 that year, a fact recognized by Congress when they privately denounced the team of "quacks" that had cared for Garfield.
